میکروسفرهای توخالی یا میکروبالن ها ذراتی کروی هستند که درونشان گاز وجود دارد و قطری بین 1 تا 1000 میکرون دارند. در این کار میکروبالن های اولیه منبسط نشده توسط پلیمریزاسیون سوسپانسیونی تهیه می شوند. پلیمریزاسیون سوسپانسیونی شامل دو فاز آبی و آلی است. با مخلوط کردن دو فاز، میکرو قطراتی شکل می گیرد که با افزایش دما تا حدود 70 درجه مانند میکرو راکتورهایی عمل می کنند که شامل پلیمریزاسیون محلول هستند.
